Hello from West Virginia, US. I am planning a trip to San Juan in September, 2010 for my younger sisters birthday. I am looking to plan activities and such, but would love some direction on the "hidden" activities and places to visit. Things that may not be on a general website viewed by everyone. These places make the experience more fun and exciting. Maybe a small local place to eat with good local food, or a local bar, or places to see, hike, explore....? Any ideas and/or help would be appreciated!     Wink

You've come to the right place! If you are looking for the more secluded areas of Puerto Rico, you can try the other places of the island other than San Juan. Exploring the south is an excellent idea. You can start from Ponce, then from there travel west / north west. There are plenty of places to explore on Ponce then the south west of the island.

Since Ponce is on the south away from the capital, things tend to be less crowded. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys! Actually I am talking it over with my boyfriend, we have been brainstorming and would love to actually move down there. We both have college degrees and are looking for a more simplified life.  Small house near the beach, and we dont care where we work or what we drive. I need to do some research to present to him, any ideas?.... cost of living, basic needs, where to live, work...etc. I was thinking it would be a good idea to live close to an airport so when our families decided to visit we would be close.

Any info would be appreciated!!!
BTW...its snowing here.....I hate COLD WEATHER!!!!!

haha. You'd be amazed at how many people tell us exactly the same thing. Let's get started then.

Right now, the area in Puerto Rico where most stateside people live is in the north-eastern area of Puerto Rico, namely, Fajardo, Ceiba, Luquillo. This is so for many reasons: first, there are couple of bases in the area, including the old roosevelt roads naval base, so you can expect to find many stateside families that relocated to the area due to their commitments with the armed forces. In time, there has been a growing community of stateside americans on the area, so you can expect a lot of english-talking people there. Also, it is the most dynamic area in terms of amenities: close to the El Yunque rainforest, and plenty of beaches and other attractions. Also, the area lies close to San Juan, so you'll have the Luis Muñoz Marin airport at no more than 30 to 1 hr's drive.

So of you plan on relocating, I recommend going north-east. If you see a map of Puerto Rico, locate San Juan. Then to the east, follow the shore you will find Rio Grande, Luquillo, Fajardo, and on the eastern-most part, Ceiba. Also, the area is close to most of Puerto Rico's american corporations and pharmaceutical companies, so if you plan on making a carreer, this is also your best bet.

However, if you want to be more off the road, you can also choose to live in one of the eastern Islands like Vieques or Culebra. Choosing among these depends how isolated you want to be. Vieques is a bit more commercialized than Culebra, so if you want to live completely off the chart, Culebra is a good option. Bad side is that you need to take a 45min ferry to the island.

Another option also is the north-western part of the Island, namely Isabela, Arecibo, Hatillo, or the surfing capital of the world, Rincón hehe. Since there is a base in Arecibo, you can expect also many english-talking people, businesses and services, and also LOTS of beach fun like kayaking, snorkeling and scuba, surfing and plenty more.

So in essence, two options: going north-east or west:

EAST:
- Plenty of hotels and tourist activities
- Far enough from San Juan metro area, but close enough to the airport
- Plenty of american businesses
- Close to the Vieques and Culebra islands

WEST
- Not many american businesses, but a good deal of tourist attractions

REMEMBER: Puerto Rico is a small island, so no matter where you live, you can get anywhere you want in a short drive.

Let me know if this was helpful.
